Reading List for September (Week 3) by Rochelle D’souza

Hope you enjoyed reading all the articles last week and also found some time to rest.

How did you find articles shared last week? Would you like to read more about a particular area or topic. Do let me know and I will be happy to share them in the list.

I am back to sharing 18 articles this week from different sources. Hope you enjoy them. This time I have included an autobiological graphic novel. This is just to bring in some change.

No recommendations came in this week, so I am leaving that part blank. I would love to share articles that you send. Do send what you enjoyed reading so that it can be shared with the other readers. I am sure as readers too you find it interesting to know what others are reading.

Please find the list of 18 articles and 1 graphic novel.

  1. Ma'am in the article #2, can you reaffirm the main idea of the passage?
What I understood from it was there are two different political class : the one that follows 1960s era of change and the one from 1950s era of conservatism and bourgeois families and in the present time, it is contested that Americans must adopt values prevalent in 1950s. It was completely opposite to what is often though about 'fifties', it was rather during 1950s itself when conservatism was overturned(since social scientists take time to publish their findings, the timeline is thus confused here). In the fifties four ideologies which focussed on outward thinking/other directed(people ascribing to what their similar ideological groups preach) rather than inward thinking, had created a distorted reality. This distortion is explained in each of the four ideologies, which is for some segments of a particular ideology (like in the example of capitalists) beneficial for masking their evil intent(I felt author to be a bit cynical at this juncture). And these school of thoughts from the era of fifties have transcended down to the present. It is even argued that values inculcated in a bourgeois family may not help to uplift the society in the present scenario because the economy has changed from that of an agri based one (which is a reason why in 19th century such a value system was helpful). Moreover since there is so much hidden distortion in the four ideologies, it has confused many ideologues why people had voted Trump who is outside all these 4 classes of ideologues. One reason could be these illusionary ideas might not have helped people to represent themselves fully into the democracy. So in the end author asks everyone to understand that we don't require the 1950s school of thought, and everybody must understand that the social changes brought in during 1950s is the reason behind the current mess. Americans must retire from those thoughts.
